Governor Richardson in Albuquerque to Bring Attention to Energy Safety Issue at Highland High School

Governor Richardson at the request of State Senator Shannon Robinson was at the Highland High School at 2:00 p.m. today to pledge funds for the redevelopment of Coal Av. S.E. because it has become a safety issue for the high school students who have to cross the street not once, not twice, but as many as three to five times a day. The student’s report that the cars going down Coal are not even slowing down and that they fear for their very life every time they have to cross the street. At the east end of the street is a Wal-Mart Supper Center. The street redevelopment between Jefferson and Jackson would require it to be blocked off, new sidewalks and upgrades to crosswalks. The students say that this would help prevent someone from being seriously harmed or even killed on the street.

I also ran into City Councilman Brad Winter at the High School. He said that he was working hard to make sure that the older schools were getting the attention they need to support the students in our area of the city. City Councilman Rey Garduno was not present today but I hope he will support the funding to redevelop Coal Street for the safety of our high school students. I know that Ray Garduno has been active in helping support the redevelopment of part of the city around Zuni and Gibson between San Metro and Eubank. The southeast part of our city is getting older and is very much in need of a helping hand to redevelop in order to thrive in the future.

Councilman Winter noted that now that our Governor is no longer running for president that he has become once again the hands on governor that we all know and that members of the Democratic Party have come to expect in our state. The Governor has made it crystal clear that the safety of our children is one of his highest priorities so anytime that one of our state senators points out something that he can do to increase their safety or welfare he is always Johnny on the spot or should I say Big Bill on the spot. I saw channel 7 news so if you want to see and hear his statement you can check it out on their news station at 5:00 p.m.
